Mealy bugs, scientifically known as Pseudococcidea, are classified as crustacean insects that affect plants by sucking their sap. There are various types of mealy bugs, including citrus mealy bug, sugarcane mealy bug, hibiscus mealy bug, long-tailed mealy bug, and Australian mealy bug.
The insect has an oval shape, and it can be identified by the white substance covering and protecting it. Mealy bugs can cause damage to plants, such as wilting in stems and leaves, yellowing, and fruit drop. Additionally, they secrete a sticky substance called honeydew, attracting ants and facilitating the spread of the mealy bugs among plants.
Signs of mealy bug infestation include white clusters on stems, branches, leaves, and fruits, along with stunted plant growth. Mealy bugs can be controlled through preventive measures, such as ensuring the quality of seedlings and eliminating weeds and infected plants. In case of increased infestation, chemical control using substances like chlorpyrifos or imidacloprid can be employed.
